Longhorns often boast beautiful colors, impressive body size and exceptionally long antennae. That is why they have sometimes been called precisely the aristocrats of the beetle world.
The first encounter with a longhorn can be a memorable experience - like when a long emerald green muskbuck flies past in front of your nose and lands with a thud on the cabin's pale red panel. Some species can be species determined directly on the spot in nature, which makes them perfect to "watch" just like birds and butterflies. The name longhorns comes from the fact that most of these species have long antennae, sometimes even longer than the body itself.
You have the best chance of seeing a longhorn if you look in flowers where they eat pollen, or in live and dead trees where they are often seen crawling. Many longhorns depend on old and dead trees because their larvae live in wood and under bark, in some cases for up to ten years. The longhorns clearly show how important it is to preserve old forest. The pictures in the book are made with a special technique where series of photographs with a shifted focal plane are assembled together digitally. The result is images with impressive depth of field and clear details.
