The 2nd edition has been expanded with a chapter that describes, among other things, how ocean currents, waves and strata arise as well as how to measure temperature, salinity, oxygen content, nutrients, primary production, etc. All species names, both Swedish and scientific, have been updated.
The animals and plants of the sea describe over 700 animals and algae and plants in the sea and coastal areas from the southernmost North Sea to the Åland Sea. The book covers the more common larger animals, algae and plants down to a depth of about 20 m. The species are described and shown with lifelike drawings and many underwater photographs show the species in their natural environments. The book also describes the sea as a living environment and tells about the way of life of animals and plants and different types of sampling.
The animals and plants of the sea appeal to everyone with an interest in life in our seas and are a rich source of the knowledge needed to protect and preserve them for the future. The book is written by marine biologists Marianne Køie and Aase Kristiansen, both associated with the University of Copenhagen. The book is the only current one in Swedish that describes both animals and plants in the sea. Translation by Ulf Svedberg (previous edition) and processing by Björn Källström and Mikael Olsson. Authors of the new chapter on water measurement are Stefan Bydén, Anne-Marie Larsson and Mikael Olsson, f.d. teacher at the University of Gothenburg.
