Svampar i Sverige is a reliable and beautiful handbook that presents over 450 mushroom species that grow in the Swedish nature.
The species are presented in systematic order with easy-to-understand texts and masterful watercolors by Bo Mossberg, one of Sweden's leading nature illustrators. Great emphasis has been placed on the detailed and beautiful illustrations. The majority of the species are depicted in the field and the intention is to show the mushrooms exactly as they grow, because growth habit and location play a big role in correctly identifying a mushroom. This is the book for mushroom enthusiasts but also for those who want to expand their picking repertoire. In addition to the species presentation section, there is a beginner's section with suggestions for twenty edible mushrooms - all easy to recognize, safe to pick and good to eat. As additional help for the mushroom picker, a chapter is devoted to describing the typical places where mushrooms grow. Which mushrooms can be found in spruce forests, bogs, deciduous forests and grasslands? The book also contains a chapter that shows how fungi can be used to recognize environments with high natural values. Presence of demanding mushrooms, so-called conservation mushrooms, can be used today by all mushroom enthusiasts to protect forests from felling. The book ends with a chapter on how to prepare mushrooms and several basic recipes. Mushrooms in Sweden was first published in 1977 with the title Mushrooms in Nature, Culture & Kitchen and with texts by Sven Nilsson and Olle Persson. This edition is rebuilt from the ground up with more than 100 new species, new shape and extensive editing of both text and images. Behind the considerable revision work this time is of course Bo Mossberg, but also the biologist Mats Karström.
