This book is an excellent travel guide for anyone going to the Azores. The book focuses on hiking trips and other experiences in nature and the landscape, when you get around the islands on your own.
Far out in the Atlantic, between 1,500 and 2,100 km west of Portugal, lie nine beautiful volcanic islands, the Azores. The nine islands each have their own distinctive character and therefore represent nine different experiences. Most Scandinavians who go to the Azores stay a week or two on São Miguel. Some choose to visit several islands during their stay. Boat connections between some of them and air connections between the others, provide good opportunities for beer hopping. The walking guide describes each of the nine islands and the authors themselves, Anita and Birger Løvland, have tried each tour at least once. The book also contains very useful information for those who want to discover the islands with a rental car. The Azores include Portugal's highest mountains, crater lakes, hot springs, untouched and wild nature, in beautiful combination with a green and lush cultural landscape. Hydrangeas and high stone walls stretch like borders between the fields and along roads and paths, even up in the mountains. Azalea, hydrangea and other beautiful plants are part of the flora, which compares to that found in Madeira. Here you can hike on peaks ranging from the majestic volcanic cone Pico to green, charming volcanic hills, where you can walk along the edge or down to the bottom of the most impressive volcanic craters imaginable. You can enjoy trips on old travel routes along the coast or between the sea and the mountains, and refresh yourself with a swim on a sandy beach, in a sea basin in the lava masses along the coast or, as on the largest island of São Miguel, experience hot springs all year round. Along some of the coasts you can experience an abundance of bird life. In the sea around some of the islands there are whales, dolphins, sea turtles and flying fish

The hiking description can be made quite short. You follow the dirt road down towards the north coast. At one point, about halfway down, the dirt road turns right, but only to cross a walled river channel and continue down on a new dirt road. You have a beautiful view of the north side of São Miguel and can see grazing cows, horses and goats. The dogs tied to the mobile milk carts make it clear that you have been spotted.
