Compared to other flies, hoverflies are easy to recognize. Fast-starting, they maneuver and land nimbly and precisely. In addition, they can hover in the same place as helicopters, hence their English name hoverflies. The Swedish name comes from the fact that they often visit flowers and are important pollinators. Hoverflies are found throughout Sweden, from north to south. The number of species is steadily increasing, which is probably due to increasing interest. It is not certain that we have gained more species, but we are noticing them to an increased extent and have better tools to document and report the findings.
