This fine poster/map shows what the cultural landscape looked like on Öland around the year 1700.
It includes all villages, village plots, row villages, and farms, as well as all enclosed fields (infields, i.e., fields and meadows), limestone pavements, churches, and chapels. Additionally, all wetlands that remained at that time, before the major drainage projects began in the 1800s and continued until the 1930s, are included. It's a significant difference compared to today! The map is based on information from 3800 village maps from the 1600s, 1700s, and 1800s of Öland villages. The wetlands visible on this and the older maps are those that were wet year-round, not the temporary pools. They were not mapped.
