What is Sweden's most common breeding bird? What is Dalarna's most common bird? How many pine trees are there per km2 of deciduous forest in Sweden? Is the most common species the same in different landscapes? How many sea eagles nest in my county?
How much of the Swedish stock do they make up? You will find the answers to these and many other questions in this book. More than 250 bird species breed in Sweden. Some are very numerous and spread all over the country, others are extremely few and local. In total, we have around 70 million pairs of breeding birds in the country. The birds' abundance and adaptation to basically all of the country's biotopes also means that they are good indicators of changes. Therefore, there is also reason to try to calculate the stocks of the various species. In this book, we estimate the number of pairs of all bird species that breed in Sweden - both on a national and regional level. At the regional level, information is presented for both counties and provinces. Much of the nature conservation in Sweden is administered at the county level and therefore the information is of great importance for management and decision-making. The entire Swedish documentation system for fauna and flora, however, has long been based on a geographical division by landscape. The work on the book has been going on for many years and involved ornithologists from several different institutions. The result is unique – hardly any other country can present a correspondingly detailed overview of the bird fauna. The book is richly illustrated with many beautiful photographs. Each species is presented on a spread, all with at least one photo. We have endeavored to choose images that show the bird in its natural breeding environment, alternatively one image of the bird and one of the breeding environment. As the amounts of text vary in length, the number of images per species also varies. Many of Sweden's most prominent bird photographers participate in the book.
