As a host plant for well over a thousand different species during the various stages of the spruce's life cycle, it has proven to be an exceptional benefactor of the forest's biological diversity.
Unfortunately, forestry rarely allows the really old grandiose firs to remain. We would like to see a landscape where really large and stately old firs are allowed to remain to a greater extent, but also several mixed forests where firs are allowed to coexist with both deciduous and other conifers of different ages. Such a landscape would benefit the diversity of species that are crowded. Innovative thinking and diversity are also needed in methods of use and care. Spruce is a useful wood, which is used for all kinds of building timber, charcoal burning, wed, and more, but still it is hardly half as good as fur, wrote Anders Rosensten a little dismissively in Sweden's first textbook on forest management from 1737. Spruce and the pine now, as then, forms the backbone of Swedish forestry. They are shade tolerant and spread easily even where other trees have difficulty growing in the absence of light. Spruce forests can be really dark, not least those that are single and planted. But during the darkest part of the year, we still make sure that the tree is light-filled, decorated and almost worshipped. The fir tree is part of Swedish culture.
This book with the fir's biological diversity in focus is a follow-up to the books Sälg: livets viktigaste frukost (2009, 2011), Asp: darrar min asp, myllrar min värld (2012), Björk: svart på vitt om myllrande mångfald (2015) and Tall: en tallrik biologisk mångfald (2017), and like these before, it was written by conservationist Bengt Ehnström in Nås and illustrated by artist Martin Holmer in Vendel. The Center for Biological Diversity at the Swedish University of Agriculture, the Nature Conservation Society and the World Wildlife Fund WWF have jointly created the conditions to produce this book in which Bengt Ehnström's clever knowledge of insects is given extra life through Martin Holmer's excellent illustrations.
