Join us on a voyage of discovery in our Swedish waters.
In Sweden, we are spoiled for water. Our waterways reach at least 5 laps around the earth and there are close to 100,000 lakes. Despite that, there are probably more Swedes who have looked below the surface of a coral reef than have looked below the surface of a lake or river. The reader is taken on a journey from the glaciers of the mountains to the bird lakes of the plains. From the largest lakes and longest waterways to the smallest spring and temporary water body. And a multitude of water environments in between. Big and small. Along the way, we meet some of the species that are linked to fresh water and that are part of the fantastic diversity found in and adjacent to our fresh water.
Freshwater specialist, photographer and filmmaker Johan Hammar has snorkeled around in lakes and rivers since childhood. Two years ago he decided to tell us about our fresh waters. Since then, he has purposefully traveled around Sweden with sound recording equipment, photo and film cameras to depict species and water environments both from the air and below the surface. In the book Sötvatten, he talks enthusiastically and vividly about pike, char, grayling, osprey and a host of other species and environments, among other things.
But this book also offers something more. It also tickles other senses. By scanning the QR codes in the book, you can listen to the ice singing, hear how a spring sounds or let yourself be absorbed by the evocative call of the great loon across the lake. Each chapter also includes a short film which can also be accessed by scanning the QR code. In addition, you can get up-to-date information on where, for example, kingfishers and terns have been observed in the last 30 days. Also that by scanning QR codes. The book Fresh water is part of a larger project that aims to increase knowledge about our fresh waters. In addition to a book, the project will also produce a large indoor exhibition, several short films, a VR 360 degree film and a lecture tour.
