Common swifts find it difficult to find suitable nesting sites in our increasingly modern society with tightly closed buildings. Help them by setting up nest boxes.
Here we have a nest box for Common swifts in untreated pine. The entry hole is 70 x 30 mm which is optimized for Common swifts. On the back there is a board for easy mounting on the wall. Opening from the short side for easy cleaning. Keep in mind that Common swifts are picky. It may take several seasons before they claim the nest. The nest is mounted high so that the Common swift has free access to the nest, which is at least 3 meters above the ground, but the higher it is placed, the greater the chance of nesting. Make sure that there are no obstacles whatsoever in front of the nest, so that they can easily fly in. The nest is preferably placed under the eaves of the house or high up in a tree. Several nests can be mounted close to each other. The nest box is attached to the wall via two pre-drilled holes in a board that runs horizontally on the back of the box. The nest box can be painted or oiled for longer durability.
