Rachel Carson's epoch-making Tyst vår
There are plenty of literary references here, to Greek myths, the Bible, Alice in Wonderland... Even though Carson stands so incredibly firmly on scientific ground, her language is freed from the heavy-handed terms that climate and environmental literature is often drawn with. I find pure poetry here as Carson marvels at nature and defends the weeds and predatory insects that ensure the diversity of the biosphere. Göran Greider, Aftonbladet
"It is brilliantly written: with clarity, control and authority; with assuredly poetic phrasing that flashes passage of chillingly lucid representations one of the books of all time that had the greatest, real impact" The Guardian
"Quiet spring is one of the clearest examples of the importance of there being people who, with knowledge, commitment and deep understanding, bear witness to the consequences of human progress on the earth's diversity and all the life that surrounds us." Patrik Svensson, author of Ålevangeliet
"Rachel Carson's Silent Spring was the wake-up call that redeemed the Western world's environmental commitment." Andreas Malm, DN
"The world's most important book" Göran Berggren, author and biologist
Rachel Carson's epoch-making Silent Spring demonstrates with few equals the enormous power inherent in articulate and knowledgeable popular science. Throughout history, books have not only carried great ideas, but also pushed the very boundaries of what we were able to think and understand. Rachel Carson's classic is a brilliant example of such a book. The greatness of what Carson did with Silent Spring lay not least in the fact that she so clearly showed the connection between the damage we inflict on nature and the suffering we subject ourselves to. Although nearly sixty years have passed since the book was first published, few things could be more important at a time when the effects of our advances in nature now so clearly point to our own demise. Silent Spring was not only read by a large audience but directly influenced legislation and the actions of the authorities in its time. It is the source of the modern environmental movement. In Rachel Carson's footsteps are writers and artists, opinion makers and activists who today stand on the barricades to once again wake us up to what we are doing to our planet.
