Summer, winter, autumn and spring - alone on a headland or together in a group on the beach, there are beautiful huts made of limestone and wind-stained wood. Along the Gotland coast there are around 200 fishing villages, a fantastic cultural heritage dating back as far as the 17th century. The fishing grounds bear witness to the time when fishing was a necessity for survival. Today, times are different and its meaning has changed to recreation instead, perhaps as important for survival now as it was then. Each fishing village has its own soul and charm. Join us on a tour to the most soulful fishing villages on Gotland, see details of windows, boats, rusty hasps, jetties, fishing nets and smoked flounder - the beautiful photos give you both smells, feelings and experiences of our Gotland cultural heritage.
In spring and early summer, the fishing villages start to come to life. The grass turns green, boats are launched, walls are tarred and winter is cleaned out of the sheds. In summer, the fishing grounds blossom and are filled with activities. Smells of smoked fish, grilled food and freshly cut grass are mixed with smells from the sea and the beach. At sunset, stories from previous generations live on on the liar's bench while new stories take hold. Autumn offers beautiful autumn colors and stormy seas, the air is fresh and clear. There is smoke coming out of the occasional chimney and the cozy factor is high with candles and bonfires. The calm spreads in the fishing villages and when winter comes it feels like most of the sheds go into hibernation, embedded in soft winter blankets.
