The rich flora of Öland has always aroused admiration.
"Meadows and fields smell of herbs and arouse admiration through their indescribable loveliness," wrote Olaus Magnus as early as 1555 in his History of the Nordic Peoples. Barely two hundred years later, Carl von Linné was just as enthusiastic. Countless botanists have subsequently examined and described the flora of Öland, and the plant conditions on the island are therefore among the best known in the country. But not as much has been written about the cultural history of Öland's plants.
In this book, the cultural historian Kjell-Håkan Arnell and the illustrator Ingrid Arnell have selected 28 island flowers and tell in text and pictures about the name history, medicinal use, folk beliefs and legends. Among other things, we learn why bridal bread has been called boar's code, how wormwood can be used to arouse tender feelings in the person you desire, and that the person who eats the first blueberry of the year receives effective protection against all kinds of diseases and other dangers for an entire year. ..
