In Sweden's waters hides a world of fascinating animals with exciting lifestyles. In the first volume about seashells, we get to go down into the depths and experience a fantastic world.
146 species are presented here, including the nudibranchs, which with their strong colors and fierce protrusions are exciting photo subjects for sports divers. Even today, new species are found in Swedish waters. Heterobranchia is the most species-rich main group among bivalves. It lacks a Swedish name, but is no less interesting for that. The variety of shapes and colors is great, and there are species that have shells and those that do not. Of the approximately 370 species found in Sweden, a little more than half live on land or in fresh water and the rest in the sea.
The variation in appearance and way of life is greatest among the marine species, with, for example, the often spectacularly colored nudibranchs. Some species in the Heterobranchia swim or float freely in the water, others live among the grains of sand at the bottom. The majority move forward over the substrate with their crawling sole. Nudibranchs are a group of marine snails that lack shells and often have long, variegated colored projections on their backs. In some species, these projections, called cerata, are loaded with poisonous nettle capsules from the prey of the nettles. If a fish attacks, the nettle capsules are pushed out and burn or stun the enemy just like a stinging jellyfish. Other nudibranchs have secretions with glands that contain malodorous substances. Many lack outgrowths and are camouflage colored to avoid detection. In Sweden, there are 95 species of nudibranchs which, with their strong color patterns and fierce protrusions, are popular photo subjects for sports divers. Even today, new species are still being found in Swedish waters.
The book is the introductory volume on the subclass Heterobranchia and covers marine gilled gastropods as well as the Limnian comb-gilled gastropods. A little less than half of the species that are found in Sweden within the subclass Heterobranchia are presented in this volume, and it mainly deals with marine species.
