Biting mosquitoes touch us all and the most common thing is that they cause irritation. But if you take a closer look at them, you quickly realize that this group is also very exciting.
Most people are not aware that we actually have a total of 51 species in Sweden. And that some species have specialized in sucking blood only from certain groups of animals. An example is the frog gnat, which targets amphibians. Mosquitoes also have an important ecological function as food for birds, predatory insects and fish. They also pollinate plants. Another striking ecological function is as a spreader of disease, which has also made them feared by us humans. The most famous is, of course, the spread of malaria. Until now, few have been able to recognize the species we have, because readily available identification literature has been lacking. This has made knowledge of their life and distribution deficient. But now, thanks to Anders Lindström and Disa Eklöf, we have been able to produce a determination book with fantastic illustrations and texts that make this well-known, yet species-wise unknown group possible to determine. But at the same time, you must be aware that some species cannot be determined more than genus without genitalia studies or DNA analysis. The book describes all the 51 species that occur in Sweden, but also another 12 species that have not yet reached Sweden (as far as we know!) but which may eventually become established here. Perhaps some of these are already here and can be discovered thanks to this book? Our intention is to increase knowledge and make it possible for all curious people to become mosquito watchers who can determine the species of the mosquito that lands on the hand. The book gives tips on how to photograph in order to then be able to determine the species. Then we also want to encourage reporting in the Artportalen in order to help increase knowledge about the behavior of our mosquitoes in the country.
