The Montagu's Harrier is an elegant and beautiful bird of prey. But also a highly endangered bird of prey. It breeds in a few counties in Sweden, with Öland as its strongest stronghold. When Montagu's Harrier lay their nests in grain fields, they become difficult to see and their nests risk being destroyed during harvest.
Through the Biodiversity in Arable Land project, BirdLife Sweden, LRF, Kalmar County Administrative Board, farmers and volunteers collaborate to protect nests and raise awareness about the species.
The efforts are paying off – 2025 was a record year with 102 chicks from Öland!
