A meticulously hand-carved coot as a fun can opener
With its playful design and high quality, this cap opener is a unique craft object. The handmade wooden bird in the shape of a swimming bird feels pleasant in the hand when in use. And as a gift, it's a quirky utility item. The metal opener itself is recessed on the underside and is invisible when resting on a table.
The coot lives in nutrient-rich wetlands and inland waters in Europe, Asia, North America and Australia. They are sooty black, round and broad waterfowl with a white bill and forehead shield. Their large feet have flippers that help them both swim and stand on floating vegetation. Their floating nest is built from last year's reeds and placed in the edge of the reeds. The cubs are cared for by both parents for the first ten days or so. After that, the female and the male separate, and the young are divided between the parents, who then only take care of "their" young. Coots are an aggressive and territorial species and can even be brutal as parents. If there is insufficient food, they may bite the begging chicks until they stop. Sometimes it results in starvation and death for the young.
