In this masterpiece, through Magnus Rietz's fantastic photos, we get to see a large number of lighthouses along the coasts of the Baltic Sea.
During three years, Rietz has visited over 200 lighthouse sites in all the countries around the Baltic Sea: Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany and Russia. As the first Westerner ever, Rietz has been granted permission to visit and photograph the lighthouses on all the Russian islands in the Gulf of Finland, where time has stood still since World War II and where the lighthouse keepers are still alive. To reach the lighthouses, Magnus Rietz has used a number of different means of transport, such as a pilot boat, helicopter, snowmobile and rubber dinghy. In addition, many more or less demanding hikes in different types of terrain. The result is a magnificent and unique image material of places where few people go.
The nearly 300 photographs in the book are a magnificent tribute to the beauty of lighthouses, both exterior and interior, and to the environments in which they are found. The texts that accompany the images consist of own contemporary observations and a somewhat lighter portion of historical facts.
