The Eurasian Jay is barely the size of a pigeon and weighs around one and a half hectoliters when alive. The dominant color is red-grey, or grey-pink, the small feathers on the crown are slightly erect, a bit punk.
Despite the muted colors, the outfit can be called motley. A bit like camouflage clothing. When the screech flies, the white tail root glows and the black-tipped wings appear proportionally short. The author has studied this loud and shy, intelligent bird, our most common crow, during a lifetime of birdwatching. Its sometimes terrifying noise, screeching and howling contrasts with its beauty. Not without reason, Astrid Lindgren used her voice in her works. Bergengren has observed the bird in countless situations, its habits and quirks. It lives in many varieties around our earth, adapted to external circumstances. He also writes about how it is viewed in different cultures and which viewpoints are attributed to it. There are exciting and unexpected peculiarities here. The book is beautifully illustrated by the artist, writer and zoologist Catarina Lundegårdh, who captures the bird's character and peculiarities.
Göran Bergengren is an honorary doctor of philosophy, author, environmental pioneer and small farmer in southern Östergötland. He has extensive writing behind him, both for children/youth and adults, non-fiction books about nature and animals and fiction. Catarina Lundegårdh, musician, artist, writer and zoologist, has illustrated the book with a series of screaming portraits. She has previously published the book Trogen in i döden, with Signe Liljefor's letter to a friend about a forty-year correspondence. Last came the writing Ostoxen, a loving portrait of a tall ox. In 2022, she will come out with the book Nature's language, about and with Bruno Liljefors.
