The book, which is being published in a third edition, is a rich depiction of folk ornithology in Sweden.
We meet a multitude of names and places. Here, answers are not only given about how a bird was used, named or perceived, but also about when, where and by whom the information was given. In pre-industrial Sweden, a certain amount of knowledge of birds was necessary to cope with life. The behavior of the different birds was noticed, because it was believed to be able to read upcoming events, weather, annual growth or even war based on this. And it was believed that hidden messages could be deciphered from the sounds of the birds. The author penetrates into the depths of time and studies folk ornithology during the 18th century and the early 19th century. An extensive and sophisticated knowledge of birds is evident here. Ingvar Svanberg has previously published several books within the relatively new discipline of ethnobiology in Sweden, that is, the study of human use of and ideas about plants and animals in pre-industrial society.
